Professor John Hay, AC
Professor John Hay has been the President and Vice-Chancellor of the University of Queensland since 1996. Under his leadership, the University of Queensland has gone from strength to strength. It was named Australian University of the Year in 1998-99, and is today Australia's most successful university in winning teaching awards. It also attracts the second highest amount of competitive research funding in Australia.
Professor Hay has led the development of new research facilities that are a crucial part of Queensland's Smart State infrastructure. These include the Queensland Biosciences Precinct, the Institute for Molecular Bioscience, the Institute of Bioengineering and Nanotechnology, the Queensland Brain Institute, the Sustainable Minerals Institute and the Clinical Research Institute.
In 2006, The University of Queensland received five times the amount of Learning and Teaching awards of all other Queensland universities combined and four times the amount of competitive research grants.
Prior to this, Professor Hay was the Vice Chancellor of Deakin University in Victoria. During that time, Deakin was awarded the prize University of the Year. He is the only Australian Vice-Chancellor to have received, on behalf of his university, two Australian University of the Year awards.
Professor Hay is a member and previous chair of Universitas 21 which is a consortium of international, research intensive universities.
He was awarded a centennial medal for contributions to higher education in 2003, and was made a Companion of the Order of Australia (AC) in the Australia Day Honours list in 2004.
