Biotech on show in Queensland

Queensland will showcase Australian biotechnology to the world when it hosts the third AusBiotech National Conference from November 7 to 10 in the state capital, Brisbane.

A satellite meeting in from Cairns, 1,681 kilometres north of Brisbane, follows on November 12 to 13.

Cairns, where the Great Barrier Reef meets ancient tropical rainforests, displays remarkable biodiversity both on and off shore and has become a famous international holiday destination.

This year's conference has as its theme "Going Global." Queensland's Chief Scientist, Professor Peter Andrews, expects it to attract at least 1,400 delegates, making it the largest biotechnology event ever held in the Southern Hemisphere.

He expects the bulk of overseas delegates to be investors, looking for opportunities in Queensland.

"We are a real research resource for the world and Queensland is the most diverse region of Australia, which is one of the world's 12 megadiverse countries," he said.

"There are great investment opportunities here in Queensland for investors in this sector."
