The future face of biotech

The first eight students have graduated from Australia's first and only Bachelor of Biotechnology Innovation degree course through the Queensland University of Technology.

Their course began in October 2001 and was fast tracked from four to three years. Integrating both science and the business of biotechnology, the course received $200,000 in backing from the Queensland Government.

As a major part of their studies, students had to form their own companies and come up with ideas to commercialise. Ideas ranged from a personalised cancer diagnostic test to an educational package to promote biotechnology in high schools.
