$4.7 million research fund launched

Queensland researchers are being invited to apply for the first round of funding from the State Government’s $4.7 million Smart State Health and Medical Research Fund.

“We see this Fund as an investment in the State’s health and medical research sector and in the future health and well-being of older Queenslanders,” Premier Peter Beattie said.

He launched the guidelines for the new five-year Fund during AusBiotech 2004, the nation’s biggest biotechnology conference, which was held in Brisbane and Cairns from November 7 to 13.

The Fund will be administered by the Department of State Development and Innovation and will be divided into the $2 million Operational Support Program and the $2.7 million Queensland Clinical Research Fellowships Program.

The Support Program will provide up to $500 000 each year to Queensland’s independent medical research institutes. The Fellowships Program will appoint up to four clinician-researchers each year to undertake research in Queensland hospitals and health services.

The Fund will also assist Smart State researchers to attract further funding from other sources including the Commonwealth Government. This will help boost the competitive strength of Queensland’s health and medical research sector and position the State as one of the nation’s leading centres for R&D.
