Showpiece sites for research
As part of Smart Queensland, Brisbane’s old Boggo Road gaol site and a health research centre at Coopers Plains will evolve into Smart State showpieces.
The gaol site will become an ecosciences precinct and the Coopers Plains facility a health and food sciences precinct. Scientists at both precincts will pursue research aimed at sustaining the environment and improving health, longevity, and the quality of food.
When developed, the Boggo Road ecosciences precinct will be an Australian first, positioning Queensland at the forefront of climate change and sustainability research, and helping the state better manage its natural resources and support the development of its industries.
Queensland departments involved in the precinct will be those with a strong ecosciences component: the Department of Natural Resources and Mines, Department of Primary Industries and Fisheries and the Environmental Protection Agency.
The health and food sciences precinct at Coopers Plains will build on a
site that now houses a Queensland Health research facility and will be a research
centre of excellence in health care, medicine, food and nutrition. Both precincts
are expected to be completed in 2009.
