Queensland's reputation as a world leader in tropical science will be given a boost with the creation of the Australian Tropical Science and Innovation Precinct at James Cook University in Townsville.
The Queensland Government has provided $14 million to the project from the State's Innovation Building Fund.
The $34 million development will be a joint venture between James Cook University and CSIRO, with the involvement of the Australian Institute of Marine Science (AIMS) and the Department of Primary Industries and Fisheries.
It will bring together more than 220 researchers and support staff and is destined to become the leading tropical science and innovation facility in the southern hemisphere.
Tropical Queensland is home to significant natural assets like the Great Barrier Reef, tropical rainforests, savannas and wetlands, all of which provide challenges for scientists and researchers.
The new precinct is expected to boost Queensland's competitive advantage in tropical sciences.
Others involved in the precinct include:
Construction of the purpose-built facility is expected to begin in 2007.
