Message from the Premier
Albert Einstein once said that the significant problems we have cannot be solved at the same level of thinking with which we created them.
That maxim is more relevant today than ever as the world grapples with global warming and here in South-East Queensland we battle the worst drought in recorded history.
However, as you’ll see in the pages of this issue of Catalyst, Queenslanders from all walks of life are taking Einstein’s advice and thinking outside the square to create innovative solutions to a myriad of problems.
This issue looks at plans to make Queensland a world hub for water research and the home of a ‘one stop shop’ to take medical cures all the way from the test tube to the pharmacy.
We also look at a world-first nanofiltration system which has the potential to remove viruses from water, air and blood and we examine how Queensland’s mega-diverse rainforests are playing a part in medicine.
Of course Queenslanders are not just excelling in medical and scientific research. Our cover story features Queensland animators and visual effects artists who have set a new benchmark for TV animation worldwide. Also featured is an educational program developed in Queensland which is being used in 13 countries to help teenagers avoid depression.
I’m sure you’ll find these and the other Smart State accomplishments within these pages to be exciting, innovative and informative.

Premier and Minister for Trade
