Millennium Arts Project

Millennium Arts ProjectThe Millennium Arts Project, announced in 2000, is a major commitment of the Queensland Government to upgrade and expand arts and cultural facilities throughout Queensland. The $291 million project represents the most significant investment in the arts in this State in more than 30 years and is one of the largest arts infrastructure projects undertaken in Australia.

A total of 20 arts and cultural facilities throughout the State received funding through the Millennium Arts Regional Program, a component of the Millennium Arts Project. Arts Queensland is the lead agency for the Queensland Government in the Millennium Arts Project.

In Brisbane the Millennium Arts Project at the Queensland Cultural Centre, due to open in December 2006, includes the new Gallery of Modern Art, the redeveloped State Library of Queensland and recreational and outdoor spaces which overlook and engage the Brisbane River.

When the Millennium Arts Project is completed, Queensland will have the largest Gallery of Modern Art in Australia and a contemporary State Library with greater access to the State's heritage collections.
