Smart State Strategy 2008-2012
Future focus
There’s no doubt about the importance of innovation to our economy. Economists estimate that 50 to 80 per cent of economic growth comes from innovation and new knowledge.
Smart State achievements since 1998
- 36 new Queensland research institutes, such as the Institute for Molecular Bioscience and the Institute for Health and Biomedical Innovation.
- Over 230 new scholarships, fellowships and grants to support groundbreaking research.
- 60,000 new jobs created in knowledge intensive industries.
Smart State 2008-2012: a new direction
- Innovation Skills Fund – $23.3 million to support more researchers in our world-class research institutes and industry-research exchanges.
- Health and Medical Research Program – $25 million to attract 40 world class clinicians, health professionals and researchers to translate research into better health services for Queenslanders.
- Innovation Projects Fund – $60 million to support collaborations between research institutions and industry, and between local and international researchers.
- Designing Queensland – $3 million to increase the profile of Queensland’s design expertise and lift industry competitiveness through design.
